Hey all, new here and looking for some answers. My 78 town landau with the 351w keep stalling the minute I put it in drive but runs fine at idle in neutral and even reverse. First time really messing with carbeurated engine and trying to figure this out to at least be able to drive it while fixing it up as a project with my son. Any and all help is appreciated and I thank you!

It might be a transmission issue. With age/ abuse/ lack of maintenance an torque convertor can try to lock up at idle speeds. I'd find a reputable transmission shop and ask them to look at it.

My Tbird is a 1979 Landau with 351 Windsor and only 18,000 miles it does just the opposite of yours and stalls when I stop but restarts when I give it some gas. I was told to check the float holes on the carburetor and that it might need a carburetor float adjustment.

You have to decide if it's spark or fuel. Slowly put your hand over the carb while it's idling to see if there is an increase in speed. If there is you need to correct it with the mixture screws on the base or chase vacuum leaks. Don't discount the spark idea though. Cause and effect. In drive you are slightly lifting the drivers side of the engine. I've seen the harness from the distributor to the ignition module either get chaffed or the wire casing shrink and go bare and short to ground.
