What is the purpose of these black things? Are they for sound proofing?

Hi everyone,

Can someone explain the purpose of the black pieces that are secured with adhesive to the inside of the side roof sheet metal? Is there an advantage of leaving them off when I finish my interior? I will probably put them back on as they were put there for a reason. In the picture I am holding the black material and just to the left of it is where it goes....inside that area against the inside of the side roof sheetmetal. I am on my mobile phone and don't know how to post the picture. I will in the next day or two. It is a black, parallelogram shaped material that is shaped like the location that it fits in. It is about 3/16" thick or less. It also has some access holes in it...probably to access roofside trim hardware.

Yes on the sound insulation but as typical for the era a very poor one. As far as reusing it, depends on what you want for originality. They counldn't use an actual insulating material as water intrusion was a problem. We have better chemicals now. A spray on undercoating will insulate better as long as it doesn't interfere with access to functional parts.

Thanks HeadAcheGuy. I thought that is what they were. I agree with u. I wonder how much sound reduction from adjacent cars and traffic these thin black things could afford. I guess they may have helped a little bit to keep the cabin quieter, especially for the rear passengers whose ear is right next to the sheetmetal of the side roof.
