Telescopic column

I have a 56 T-Bird with the telescopic steering column. It will not lock in place. The collar just keeps turning and has no effect. The owners manual says to turn 1/2 turn to lock and unlock. Not working.

I have an 81 Corvette with that feature. Last time I had the wheel off I was had to adjust the mechanism to make it perfect. Mine works by cinching down on a nylon bushing. Yours is probably similar. Take the wheel off and investigate.
