That sounds about right. I'd check the gear first as I would think its easier to remove. I know on my Mustangs, you have to remove the instrument panel to reach the cable to remove it and I'm pretty sure Ford did the same on the T-Birds. I have yet to take mine out as I've recently got the car. I'm not a professional but I've worked on everything I have.

I'm not a professional but I've worked on my 62 tbird since april and learent alot on the car and it great to work with metal not plastic :cheers
 
Do not remove the instrument panel. You can remove the speedometer only. Pull off the chrome bezel to see screws holding speedo head in place. Remove head, unscrew speedo cable and pull out cable core. Another cause of jumping would be a kink in the cable as it goes from speedo head to transmission.
 
i removed the cable by moving the streering to the side reached up behine the gauge and remove it the cable is broken thatshy the speedo not working i check the gear in the tranimisson and order new one
