I've had a shudder develop on right turns in my 61 HT - when you go around a corner. It's felt throughout the car, but appears to be in the back. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but mostly it does. I've talked with several mechanics about it, and they scratch their heads.

When I first noticed it, the transmission had just been rebuilt, motor mounts replaced and the park brake adjusted. I don't know that the transmission and motor mounts would be it. I hoisted the back end up to see if one of the brakes was dragging - it doesn't appear to be.

I wonder if it's the differential. I changed the oil in it, but it still does it. The oil was low when I changed it. The tag on the car says it should have a conventional axle - #6, but I couldn't find a tag on the axle itself. My thought was maybe someone had changed the axle out for an Equalock axle, which I read might shudder/make noise if it had the wrong fluid or not enough fluid.

Anyone have an idea for me?

Thanks,

Eric

Look for rub marks on the inside and outside of all tires.

Possibilities: Wrong size tires --> rear axle is about to come out !

I just replaced the power steering gear and the idler arm assembly and it doesn't shudder anymore. Not sure if it was one or both of the components, though suspect it was the idler arm. The gear was worn and leaky so it needed to go anyway. A little pricey, but a good move.

:bangheadHere is how to tell if you have a locking diff, jack the car up from the pumpkin and turn one rear wheel by hand, if the other wheel turns in the same direction then you have a locker/posi/etc. If it is a locker the shudder could be from the discs and you do need a special additive. If you have the one whell wonder type then the other wheel will turn in reverse. Look at your spring hangers and make sure they are plumb look at and try to move the banjo from side to side U joint could be bad tranny mount could be broke the whole shudder sounds like something is coming out of alignment.:smash
