Like many others, my 66' slips out of park into reverse. I have to hold up on the lever to start the car, and when that doesn't work, place it in neutral, lift slightly, and then it will start. I have already replaced the neutral safety switch. I purchased a new shift detent plate, but can anyone tell me how and where to change the old one?

Thank you.

Sounds like the neutral start you installed needs adjustment.
As for the detent plate I don't think that is your problem, they are tough. What usually happens is the shift lever end wears as it is softer than the detent.

Joe,
Thanks for the input. I changed the shift lever yesterday, and sure enough, there was a notch in the lever where it slides over the indent plate. With an adjustment of the neutral start switch, it's now like brand new. No more jumping out of park or holding the lever in various positions to get the car started.
