Thanks to those that helped with my neutral safety switch issue... the issue has been resolved.

The problem I am having now is that the reverse lights won't work. I have searched through the shop manual and haven't found any info on where a backup light switch might be. Any info I have found points to the neutral safety switch but I have repeatedly tested that theory to no avail.

Thanks for your insight.

Dan

Dan,
First off my 55 doesn't have the backup light feature, so I can't talk from experience. But I do know that the wiring on these cars is fairly simple and straightforward. So much so that the electrical manuals for 55-57 TBirds show pictorial hookups for the wiring rather than circuit diagrams. A search of several websites shows that the switch also controls the backup lights, if the car is so equipped (But Ford only made the one switch whether you had backup lights or not.). If you have the switch cleaned up properly and mounted on the car correctly, such that the starter engages when the shifter is in neutral, it only stands to reason that the switch will be properly located when you put the shifter into reverse. So with the shifter in reverse your neutral safety switch should have the wires for the backup lights showing continuity. Check yours to be sure that it does. If this checks out okay, then you have a short somewhere in your wiring to the backup lights, or the light bulb sockets are not properly grounded. If you can't get continuity in the switch for the backup lights when the shifter is in reverse, then you have problem inside the switch or its wiring.

Hi Dan, I read somewhere that your lights need to be on for the back-up lights to work. If you already tried it this way and they still don't work, contact me. I probably have the info somewhere in one of my books. 56 Bird, Bill
