Howdy!

I just bought at 64 bird, 140k, no rebuild but soon needs one. Had a few questions for anyone out there:

Any experience on car stereo systems? Mine has an am radio, no longer working. Wondering what people have done with replacements, either taking the old radio out or placing the new radio somewhere else, plus speaker installation, where, etc.

thanks!

This really depends on what you want to achieve. I have seen people rebuild the original radio and use a boom box for enhanced sound, and I have seen others, have a classic to pieces just to install a competition stereo.

It's all in what you want to accomplish.

Crazy about them square birds - don't know why - just love em - a rollin piece of art work is what they are.

If your 64 is all original like mine, you probably want to preserve its value by rebuilding the original AM radio (to keep the car stock). The sound's not bad if your car was also equipped with the optional rear speaker. Just throw a boom box in the back seat for those times when you really want to "crank some tunes".

If your town doesn't have someone who re-builds old car radios for re-installation, I can email you the name and number of a good specialist. Good luck!

I believe a place called Central Auto Sound sells an in dash replacement radio that fits without cutting the dash up. You can get an AM/FM or you can get a radio with a remote CD changer. They sell a replacement speaker that fits in the place of the one in the dash that is stereo. I do not have an email address or website for them but should not be hard to find them. Be warned this stuff is specialty stuff and is very expensive.

i put a replacement "old style am\fm\tape deck radio in my 66 bird. works great. alos put 2 4inch speakers in place of the original 4x10 go to macsantigueautoparts.com for some ideas.
