Front coil spring replacement

Hi I am keen to replace the front coil springs with Aerostar variable rate springs as I have seen in a couple of restoration articles. Does any one know the free height (uncompresses) and installed (compressed) height of the original springs? The Aerostar springs I have seen are Moog CC850 with free height (uncompressed) of 11.65 inches and installed height of 8.75 inches. I need to know if these are suitable. From what I have read, these Aerostar springs give a stiffer ride and drop the front by 1 - 2 inches. Love to have comments and advice. Cheer Mal

I wonder if you wouldn't get an answer from a Thunderbird parts supplier, such as Hill's Thunderbird Center? They sell new parts, but have entire used TBirds that they scavenge for parts that are no longer available or made, like control arms, etc.

They should be able to give you the dimensions of a new spring, and a used one as well, and one presently on a car. Just a thought.

Any update? My '55 has a 302 / automatic in it now. The original engine / trans was definitely heavier. As a result of the powertrain swap my front rides a little higher. I was thinking about putting in dropped spindles but the spring change could be another option.

Call Eaton Detroit Spring. They can make a set to account for the lesser weight.
