Aluminum Valve Cover refinishing

I recently acquired a used original set of aluminum valve covers for my 55. They are in need of polishing and painting. Any advice on the proper methods to refinish, and paint in between the fins and on the emblems would be appreciated.

I resently did mine. I used my 6" grinder and installed buffing wheels. I used brown then white compound to buff the covers out. Then I used acidtone to clean the buffing compound in the logo groves. After that I painted the green in the logo first then the red. I got the paint from one of the T-bird dealers. Then I did a final hand buff in "Mothers Mag Polish" to give it a real good shine. Turned out great.

Many thanks for the info! Been out of country for 2 weeks and just got back to see your reply today, and really appreciate it. One last question; did you think of clear coating them to prevent having to do them again, or would you suggest not bothering?

More thoughts: Try beadblasting the casting in the long ribs. You can use a toothbrush and polish in those areas, but leave them a little dull. Just remember, when buffing, the valve covers are pourous, and bubbles will appear. Just live with it, dont try to polish them out, more will appear. Clearcoat is not generally advisable. Buff away!!! The painted areas should match the emblems

Thanks for the additional info! I was having second thoughts about the clear coating myself.
