Hi, Have a 56 bird, gas gauge, clock and map light won't work and the speedometer sets at 10mph when it's parked. I do remember the map light on at one time......any ideas?? Thank you, Bill

To trace the gas gauge problem, find the 4 inch round dome shaped cover in the centre of the trunk floor and remove its one screw. Under it is the gas tank sending unit. You may find that the single wire to its lead is corroded and needs cleaning. If that doesn't do it, remove the 8 or 10 screws that hold the sending unit, and lift the entire sending unit out of the tank. (Obviously, take care not to cause any sparks, and be sure to be in a well ventilated area.) When you go to put it back into the tank, you'll find that the screw holes will only line up one way (just keep turning the sending unit in a circle until they do). This keeps the sending unit properly orientated inside the tank to give accurate readings. Two things may be wrong with it. Its float may have sprung a leak and be full of fuel, causing it to rest on the bottom of the tank reading an empty tank. Fix it by drilling a small hole in it, blow out the gas, and reseal it with solder or fibreglass resin. The other problem may be that its not sending any signal, easily tested with a multi meter reading resistance, using the wire connector with one probe and the mounting plate ground with the other probe as you move the float through its full range of movement up and down. If its toast, you'll need a new one from any of the TBird suppliers. If you get varied readings as you move the float, then its a wiring problem to the gauge in the dash, or the gauge itself. For the clock, usually its not getting power (find the one wire and test for power going into the clock) or its motor has seized due to old age and corrosion. If its getting power but won't run, send it to a TBird clock repairer. Check the Hemmings.com site for a clock service. The map light may be a burnt out bulb, or the entire socket has fallen out of the light assembly losing its ground. Check its wire colour and trace it to each door switch and be sure that they are connected and not corroded as well. Good Luck!
