I have a 1955 t bird with non power drums I would like to upgrade to a front disc set up. Are there any cars out there that have a spindle that will fit my car? Thanks for the help.
Go online to thunderbirdbrakeparts.com. They have several different setups to do the conversion, and from the looks of what's included in the kit, you use your original spindles, if my eyes don't deceive me. Good Luck!
I got a front disk conversion thru JAMCO Suspension that bolted to the existing spindle. After 3 years/8000 mi, they're working great. Try jamcosuspension.com.
I recently did the upgrade on my 56. The calipers were from a mid-60's Mustang, I think (I ordered a kit). However, they didn't attach directly to the spindle, there was a mounting plate that looked like it was custom for the t-bird. It required a bit of grinding on the existing spindles, but not in any place that would compromise their strength.
Also, a couple of people I talked to about this highly recommended going with power-brakes for this conversion (I already had a dead booster that I had rebuilt and installed with the kit). They said that the disc brakes required more pressure than the drum brakes and that it would be difficult to get this pressure without a booster.
I've got a few blog posts about this project at: T-bird Repair Blog
