Just bought 66 T-Bird, all original, a bit "tired" but no major rust. Someone put a bad paint job on it, but no rear trunk lid rust. Previous owner put a cheap sunroof in it.
What's a fair price to put sheet metal back on to replace sunroof? Anyone got a front bumper?

Call Mel or Errol at Hollywood Motorcars 800-235-2444 and get their thoughts about the best way to handle your sunroof situation. These guys run a great Thunderbird-only restoration shop and could also sell you a 66 bumper over the phone. Visit their website at: http://t-bird.net and look through their parts inventory too. They're in Hollywood, Florida.

I'd talk to a good body man about welding a large "patch panel" to permanently close the home-made sunroof. Then you'd have to replace the inside overhead console somehow next (and its wiring). From what I've heard, cutting the complete roof off these cars to make a convertible, weakens the structural supports at the pillar. The frame has to then be reinforced somehow before it will support the now removable hardtop. Plus, you then have a removable hardtop that weighs a ton and is difficult to remove without a wench or hoist. I'd forget the convertible idea and just patch up the sunroof. Anybody else got any other ideas here?

Come to think of it, maybe only the 66 Landau had the overhead console. I've got a 64 and am not completely sure about the 66. I bet your 66 didn't have it to start with because removing it to cut a sunroof would've really been a big job. To see the factory original specifics for the 1966 Tbird, jump on the VTCI website at: www.vintagethunderbirdclub.org. You might find other things about your car that have been modified or tricked-up over the years.
