hey guys. its good to see that lots of good help is being given here. hopefully i can get some too.

okay, my 66 bird backfires anytime i go over 40 mph. my engine isnt in any tip top shape so thats not gonna help the situation. i can hear and feel the backfire right under my seat if that helps any. thanks for your time.

timing you say... i'll give it a shot when i get home today. im not really familiar with engines and stuff but i'll look around in the manual. thanks woodward.

Joe is right....again :)

I had that EXACT problem on my 1977 Harley Davidson and all I did was replace the condensor. Try that first (they're about $2-3), then time it.

Moose, if you want to solve the problem the best way is to install a Pertronix Ignitor. It sets right into your distributor and eliminates the points and condenser. I installed one 3 years ago in my 66 and it has worked fine. No more replacing points and condenser Costs around 80 bucks. The Bird Nest in Portland Or. has them.

Or, you might pick one up at your local speed shop.
