Gentlemen,

Five years ago starting the 55 was never an issue when the engine was warm or hot. Cold, the starter cranked like a demon, but when the engine was up to temperature it cranked so slowly you'd have thought the battery was just about dead. The issue was definitely not timing. There was no kick back.

Earlier this season I pulled the starter and had an auto electricial shop check it out. It needed a total rebuild. Once it was back in the car the warm start issue was still there.

So today I pulled all three cables (battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter, and battery to engine block ground). I took them to a heavy truck supply shop and had new cables made up using heavier gauge wire.

The original cables looked almost new, even though they are 60 years old. (car has only 28 000 original miles) Once I had the new ones back on the car, I took it for a spin to get the engine up to temperature and turned it off.

Wow! Does she ever turn over well now when its hot. One or more of my old cables was definitely bad internally, but these new heavier cables sure deliver the voltage like gang busters.
