Hi folks. Stripped my 57 TB down a few weeks ago for a paint job. While the engine was out, I thought I'd deal with a problem with the fuel pump eccentric (it's loose) and paint the engine up. The timing cover is loose and ready to drop off, except I can't remove the crankshaft pulley. I used a three-claw pulley remover and screwed it in, but all that happened was that the harmonic balancer slowly moved outwards on the crank pulley, showing the rubber seal between it and the pulley.

It doesn't look like some I've seen on you-tube where the guy uses a puller and screws into three holes in the front of the pulley. Mine has none. I'll try to take some pics (the car's in a shed a mile or so from home). Also, there appears to be 4 circular notches (maybe where pins are knocked through?) on the shaft an inch or so behind the crank pulley. I'll try to attach a photo.

You can't use the type of pulley shown to remove the balancer,. It's hard to explain, but you have to have a tool that has metal bar that goes inside the balancer and contacts the outer rim with a turn bolt to get it off.

If you can't get the metal ring back into position, it's time for the Damper Doctor.

I recommend you get the tool that CASCO has to remove it or make one yourself.. See CASCO's catalog, page 57. CASCO's is a litle pricey, but you won't screw up the balancer which is at least three times the 44.00 to repair or replace.
