How to remove headlight switch on '61 Bird?

I really don't want to break this switch, so how do I remove it from the dash? Once I have it loose the knob is in the way to pull it through. Does the knob unscrew or do you just pull it harder and it pops out? What is the little button for on the bottom of the switch?

The little button on the bottom of the switch releases the knob and shaft from the switch.
