I'm upgrading the blower selector bezel on my 55 TBird. I figured out how to remove the knob. Now I see there's a nut underneath it which the selector switch shaft protrudes through. I saw the nut on the National Parts Depot (part #T-13753-2). Anyone have an idea how I unscrew this nut? If the shaft wasn't there it looks like I could use a phillips screwdriver. However, as I believe I need to unscrew this nut in order to remove the switch, a phillips screwdriver is not the answer. Is there a special tool?

vintagestg,

Once the knob is off, the part holding the switch to the dash is plastic, so be careful with it. It will break or strip its threads if over tightened.

That said, it simply unscrews counter clockwise. The trick is getting something that will fit into its Phillips-screw-like head with the switch post sticking out of its center.

Ford had a special tool, but I've used very small needle-nosed pliers, spread apart to clear the shaft with the points extended into two of the slots, and turned the nut to loosen it. I've also used the points of a spring clip pliers in the same manner. Once you get it started to turn, its pretty easy to turn it off with your fingers.

A little WD40 on the threads when you go to put it back on will make it simpler next time.

Be aware that many of the switches through the dash are held on the same way. The ignition switch is held on the same way, but it only requires about a quarter turn to pop its nut off, as I recall. Its been a long time. Good Luck!
