Hi all. Just ordered a new fan shroud for my 1961 Bird. (When I got the car, it had no shroud.) I've attached a photo of the part I received.

I can see where each half of the shroud bolts to the top part above the fan. (I have the top part.) And I can see where the two halves bolt together at the bottom (which ought to be the "long" side on the photo's right). What I can't figure out is where the "tabs" on the bottom connect. (See the oblong holes on the right side of each part.) There's nothing down at the bottom of the radiator or the frame to attach them to. And unless I attach them somewhere, the shroud will not be stationary; it will wobble and flex. I'm not comfortable with that.

Does anyone have a photo of how this thing is supposed to go in? Alternatively, do I have a non-stock radiator?

Many thanks!

Hi Rob,

I just replaced my radiator and its in a 62' - I do recall there being two brackets at the bottom that connect to the tabs on the shroud. I think you have the correct shroud but the brackts are missing.

The brackets are bolted onto a raised mount point under the radiator and then come out into an L shape to bolt the shroud on to.

See if you can spot the mount points, If so you could make up new brackets in aluminum.

Thanks, Graeme. I'll check it out.

Sadly, the shop manual doesn't have especially good drawings of this area, so it's hard to visualize. Would it be possible to post a photo? Either way, I appreciate the reply!

Hi Rob,

sorry but I have the radiator back in the car now and it's not possible to view those brackets to take a photo.

What I can do is describe these brackets a little clearer:

- think of the letter U and stretch and flatten it out. That is the mount on the radiator and it is quite flat but enough to put a nut and bolt through.
- the bracket itself is like the letter L the short side I recall mounts to the flat side of the U mounting. The long side of the L has a hole to accommodate the shroud.

Sorry, but that's the best (worst!) I can describe it.

Imaginative! I appreciate it. One more follow-up: is the flattened-out U welded to the radiator? Because I'm not sure I have that either.

Actually, I take that back. The bottom of the radiator does have a couple of elongated "loops" that run parallel to the radiator. Is that what you're describing? They look kind of like this:

[****************************************]
[****************************************] <---Radiator
[****************************************]
[****************************************]
[****************************************] <---Bottom of radiator
------\________/------------------\_________/------ <---"Loops"

(Definitely not to scale.)

Are these loops where the 90-degree brackets would attach? I can't tell whether they have mounting holes.

Thanks again!

Yes...you have it!

I seem to recall the bolts are either very small or they are captive nuts. Mine were a bit rusty however you should be able to do something.

There will be a hole in each raised section to put that bolt into.

Good luck moving forward.
