I have had good luck with Simple Green and some warm water. I usually start with just warm water and only use chemicals if I dont make any progress.

Yea, we put air shocks in a 65 we had, the car had new springs installed before we ever got it and the springs were actually missing a leaf. The air shocks cured the ride height with very little effort.
