Cleaning wire wheels

Anyone have a good tip on cleaning and maintaining wire wheels? My 65 wheels are in good shape but light rust in places. Can I uses naval jelly to take rust off or will the chrome suffer? I have a flexible foam cone with a drill but it wont get into the finer pockets. Also any treatment work on the chrome to prevent rust?
