late model 94' bird help

Its really a 95' everything in it has 95' parts. I guess it doesn't matter but it does say Dec. of 94'. Everything is stock other than a ram/cold air intake.
Anyway, it has rough idle in gear. When in P or N if I hold the gas at 1000r's it's rough as well, but runs fine at idle when cold. The temp gauge would fuxuate when all coolant stuffworks. One time when getting on the hwy it was spitting gutts out the tailpipe. lol, it was a sputtering gutless speedup. This happened for a little while and went away when I took the single wire off of the coolant temp sensor for the gage and cleaned the sensor.
Wierd huh.
There is an egr no flow code and a metal mess screen with triple ply nylon (pantiehose material) for an air filter. Yes I can wash it and do have to maintain it a lot more but it gives a lot of airflow.
My MAF went out and I replaced it with OE.
I was thinking feul filter.
What do you guys think.

Sure sounds like the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation). NOTHING poisons your idle like a stuck EGR valve. Also check for vacuum leaks, hear any sucking noises?
