Highest Miles on 4.6?

My 94 4.6 t-Bird has 130K miles. Runs great. No smoke, uses 1 qt oil in 2K miles (same as at 51K miles), strong. A mechanic told me it probably wouldn't last much longer. I know she's getting old, but I'm hoping he is wrong. (He likes Ramblers). Just for curiosity...who has gotten the most miles out of their 4.6 without major repairs?

i am working on 100k on my 95' 4.6L. I have used only synthetic oil mostly moble one, and change my own oil to counteract the cost of the higher priced synth. oil. Anyway it dosn't burn a once of oil. I atribute this to the synth. oil. I drive it hard too.

I have a 1994 with the 4.6l, power everything and 4 wheel disk brakes. This is my daily driver. I currently have 300,000 miles on the orginal engine. It uses a 1 qt of oil every 2k miles, but have always done this.
The only major work was a tranny rebuild at 225K miles, 2 sets of plug wires, severial brake sets and oil changes at the 3k mark.

I bet your will last a lot longer.

BTW My bird will still hit 100 mph plus in a flash. :)

I have always used Valvoline 10-30 (mild climate in NC), changed at 5K miles (all highway). 144K miles now. I wonder if it would be a good idea to switch to the synth oil at this point?

300K miles! Man, that's encouraging! Guess I'll keep rockin. I also had to do the trans rebuild one month ago. Now the bird needs newspaper to catch the terds. I'm gonna get to the bottom of that. I also have done several brake rotor jobs. New rotors work a lot better than resurfacing. Mine also will hit 100 real quick. I wish I knew what the top end is.

I have a 94 with 90k. Mine too uses a qt of oil every 1500-2000 miles. Any ideas on why? Is now a good time to change to synthetic oil?

Grandma's '96 Town car got up to 140,000 miles and didn't leak or burn anything, but you guessed it, she drove like a Grandma. Maybe the oil has just thinned out for you at that point and you should use heavier oil or go to the synth like you thought.

BTW, how does your car look with the Eibachs on there? Got a pic?

IMHO it's never too late to run synthetic oil. I bought my SC with 90K on it, and the previous owner used Castrol GT(which is also great oil) but when I bought it I switched over to Mobil One. It now has 120k on it, and I'm now considering switching to "Royal Purple Synthetic" I've heard from many people this stuff is even better than Mobil One....we'll see!

ours has 95k, its a 94 4.6. what ive heard from lots of diff sources about castrol is that its a blend of all the other oil that has been left after bottling. and the synthetic is not synthetic, it is high grade regular oil, as there are no gov restrictions on saying your oil is synthetic whether it is or not.

162,000 here, just switched to Valvoline Maxlife every 3,000 miles.

I have about 95,000 on my bird, and I can say that I have (with a little math) had my bird over 160 mph :eek: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT TO ANYONE, they tend to get a little floaty when the needle is coming back to the 0

whast up..... i ahve a 95 4.6 V8 and i ahve a lil over 170K and its running like new.....i did ahve the trany rebuilt about 6k ago i love my tbird

Hazards, you sure need new "Sources". Castrol is a very high quality oil. In tests the 20-50 holds it's viscosity better at high temperature than any of the other 12-15 name brands tested. This test was a few years ago in Circle Track Mag. or Stock Car Racing Mag. I notice that in my Dirt Track Super Stock, the oil pressure at the end of a race on a 100 F evening in Bakersfield or Victorville is 5 PSI higher when I use Castrol 20-50, than with Valvoline, Penzoil or Quaker State 20-50. For Syn. Oil. "Mobil 1" is the only way to go, it performs just as well as the special racing oils at twice the price. My engine for next season will be "clearenced" to run the thinner Mobil 1, and still give me the oil pressure I want at the end of a long race. I hate to spend the money on Mobil 1, because racing on dirt/clay tracks, the oil and filter MUST be changed every two racing events maximum, but the reduced risk of internal damage due to running hot (radiator blocked from clay off the track) makes it worth it.

My 95 LX 4.6 has 197,000 miles and most everything is original, and not rebuilt or replaced, including;

1. engine
2. tranny
3. TC
4. Front and rear bearings
5. All bushings, except strut rod.
6. Springs and shocks (upgraded rears to Sport, however at 160,000)
