My 1960 squarebird had a rebuilt transmission, was all ok but wont go into reverse & drives forward in all gears including neutral. Fluid level is ok & is changes gear on the transmission, but only goes forward Help

Transmission fault

Hi, i do have a workshop manual, but it does'nt list any subjects covering the fault. I did speak to a transmission specialist & he thought that because it was sat over the winter, the clutch plates could be stuck on & a good drive may free it off, if not he thinks the transmission may need rebuilding again, which seems crazy to me.

I have bought a 58 T-bird which is rough, but the engine & transmission is good, would it be worth swapping the transmissions, big job, but i need my T-bird to go backwards as well as fordward, their too heavy to push lol.

I would suggest that you be sure the lever on the transmission is moving to the correct locations. ie: L,D1, D2, N, R... Could be, you are disconnected.

Hi, thank for the reply, i disconnected the transmission linkage & operated the transmission direct, it still drives in all gears. Although when you operate the gear at the transmission it clicks through the gears as you would expect it to.

Do you have the rear wheels off the ground? If not try jacking up the rear end and shift the car into reverse directly, does it go in reverse?

With the wheels off the ground you can do this check on your own without the chance of you getting run over by your own car. LOL There is also no load on the transmission being that there is no wieght on the rear wheels, it may help with the diagnosis if your drive wheels turn in reverse without load but not under load.
