how to ID the transmission
Does anyone here know how I could go about identifying the tranny of my 58 thunderbird? I'm about to pull out the motor for a rebuild, but I'd like to figure this out prior to doing so. I don't think that it is the original equipment. While the tbird is supposed to have D-L2-L1, mine only has two drive gears that I can shift into.

I don't know where "D-L2-L1" came from, but I suspect you have a cruiseOmatic that you can't shift into LOW. This is not uncommon.
What is the code on the plate on the driver's side of the transmission case? That info would be helpful in determining what transmission.
