soft tick when accelerating

My 1963, 390 FE, has a soft tick when accelerating. I do not hear it when it is idling, including standing next to the engine with the hood open. I also do not hear it when revving it in neutral, which seems strange. Lifter seems to be the most likely, especially since the car sits all winter long, but I would expect to hear that idling/revving. Any ideas?

It might be an exhaust leak. When under acceleration it might make that kind of noise.

I've read about that too. That would make more sense since I don't hear when stationary.
