Post Steering Boxes

Hello, all...

Does anyone know if there is a faster ratio steering box availible for this chassis? I don't know about the rest of y'all, but the 4 1/2 turns lock to lock doesn't exactly blow me away... Was just wondering if anyone had upgraded their car's steering any.

Mike

Funny you should ask that. Im doing that particular job on my 79 Ttop RIGHT NOW! I ran across an article in an OLD hotrod from the 80's and it states that the early 80's IROC/Transam PARTS will fit in our boxes....THEY'RE RIGHT! The only parts you have to use is the gear and the worm shaft. Afterall thy're both Saginaw boxes! AND IF YOUVE NEVER HAD A BOX APART BEFORE, PAY SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU!!
This isn't something to tackle if you're unsure. Just make sure you're drag link, pitman arm, idler arm, and tie rod assemblies are in good shape, (I recommend the PST full kit ($239 P-S-T.com)) They weren't originally intended to move that effieciently! and if they're marginal, you'll know in a hurry!

And Damn am i gonna like the 1 3/4 turns L to L!!!

Later
Paul

Cool

Gearworks, thanks for posting a reply! :D I was just about to get depressed about the amount of traffic on this forum.
I live near a junkyard fullof 77-79 FoMoCo's and 80's GM F-bodies, so I think I'll grab a couple of boxes, one from a 77-79 Cougar and the other from one of the 80's IROCs they have laying around, and play with swapping the parts around. I imagine the hard part will be coralling all the little ball bearings! Anyway, they're junkyard parts, so what do I have to lose?
Thanks for the info!

Mike
