Trunk Mounted Power Antenna

I just repaired my power antenna on my Heritage by cannibalizing the good motor from a 79 Continental. Mine was stuck up with a perfect mast (was like that when I bought it). When I got it all done I noticed the mast does not go down all the way into the fender. It sticks up a couple inches. Is this normal on these older power antennas? It is definitely going down all the way (as far as it can possibly go). Just seems odd to me they would design it this way.
I saw no evidence of anyone tampering with it in the past.

Looks like we communicate in 2 different T-Bird forums.

In any case, per your question, I've attached a pix of one of my 1978 Thunderbird DJE restorations that shows the proper position of the mast in the "down" position. You'll notice that it does stick up a little. This position for the mast seems to be factory.

ie got my power antenna in a box, as far as i know everything is fine on it except that the mast is broken, just went the route of installing a stationary one, couldnt find a mast for it anywhere.

rebuilt the stock stereo last summer though and it sounds great. Its lacking in power badly compared to todays standards though.

Anybody know how to work the seek scan feature? when i press the button it does nothing, but if i press the button while i turn it off and on it starts seeking and stops on the first station it comes to. maybe its not working like it should. I replaced all caps in the unit and rebelted the motors for the seek function. does what it should apparently but only does it when the radio is powered on with one of the buttons pressed, not "on the fly" whenever i hit the button.

You might luck out and find one with a good mast but bad motor and cannibalize it. That's what i did but just the opposite (I had a bad motor and found a good motor with a broken mast). I'm pretty sure all the big cars with power antennas used the same motors and all the parts are probably interchangeable to a degree.

My quad8 am/fm finally receives FM since I fixed the antenna but I can't adjust the station. The dial goes all the way back and forth across the screen but the station won't change.
