The gague on my '69 only went up to 3/4 also; the explanation I got from most is also what I suspected, the arm on the float gets gunked up and can't float all the way to the top of the tank. I haven't dropped the tank yet, and now my gague only reads up to 1/16

There are a couple probably cuprits of this issue...

1. The armature of the float is bent or otherwise unable to move completely to the top to the tank. Remove the sending unit and physically move the arm to the full top position and note the gauge reading. If it reads to full or higher, clean the unit in solvent (carb cleaner.)

2. The float unit has been penetrated and has taken in some fuel. This happens over the years and Fords are notorious for this. Replace the float in the tank.

3. Bad ground at the sending unit. The sending units reads from resistance in the wiring. A ground or poor connection (like a quick connect in the line) will cause a poor reading.

4. Instrument Cluster voltage regulator. There is a voltage regulator for the instrument cluster on the back of the cluster assembly. The gauge run off this separate regulator and it goes fautly over time. Replace this unit. You can find replacements as some online NOS parts supplies and often times they are listed on EBAY for sale.

Best of luck!

Jeff is right, if I were you I would pull the sending unit---you don't have to drop the tank, at least not on my 66. It is a sinch to remove with the tank in car. My sending unit was bad. When you get the new unit, phyisicaly ck. it against the gauge to see if it works ok. before installing it to make sure the gauge is ok. Also follow Jeff's insructions on the float, etc.

I would agree with the float problem i have recently removed my tank and relined it (restored ) it and cleaned out a ton of junk which has found its way in like a foot long piece of hose where someone tried to syphon out fuel and let it drop in the tank, after all how much muck and rubbish do you think can find its way into your tank after 34 years?. Th efloat was in good condition but you can buy replacement ones
