Exclamation 1968 starter stays engaged

My 1968 Thunderbird is a true beauty. I picked her up almost two years ago straight after my return from Iraq with the USMC as a welcome home gift to myself.
She sits covered now, under a carport because i can't figure out this damn starter issue. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with my ignition becaue priior to this problem, there would be times when i turned the key off and the engine kept running.
I'm very familiar with mechanical work but i just want to make sure i'm doing it right. I've never worked on an antique before.
If anyone knows a good repair manual or troubleshooting guide that can walk me through it, please, let me know.

g_lower is an unknown quantity at this point
start with you ignition switch, not the part you put your key in... most likely located behind the gauges on top of the column. this is probably your issue
