Using the mark that is next to NEUTRAL will allow your transmission to start in second gear and shift to third. Using the mark that is next to LOW will allow your transmission to start in first gear, shift to second and then to third. The one you use is strickly up to you. One is not better than the other.

I remember buying a new 64 ford Years back, and somewhere in one of the books it said to use the black dot ( THE DRIVE THAT SHIFTS ONLY 2 T0 3 ) For driving in the snow. Causes your wheels to slip less when you start.
