there isn't a relay per say but rather a large package which controls the sequential rear lights and brakes, etc. This will be in the trunk mounted behind the rear seats. It is a funny looking device with wires and 'stuff' connected to it. I have some spare kits if you need to buy one ;)

The Relay that your looking for is in the middle of that sequencer box there is a replacement for it on the thunderbird ranch for 70.00 http://www.tbirdranch.com/ go down on the left side of the home page about half way down and it has a link called Brake light relay 65-67 I think that is the part that you want. Hope this helps.

Wether you have brakes or not does not affect the lights. More than likely, the lights don't work because of a bad relay. You should check to see if you have power to the relay from the battery as well as from the brake light switch. If you do have power from these sources, but no power coming out of the relay - bad relay!

Have someone step on the brakes. If only one post on the relay lights up a 12v test light--bad relay. If no posts light the test light, you're not getting voltage from the brake light switch mounted avove the brake pedal under the dash.

Add to the above: The case on the relay has to be grounded. There should be a 10" factory BLACK wire running from the relay screwed to the trunk floor with a sheet metal screw. Clean any rust away from the shet metal screw.

I fixed my tailights, it seems that it was jsut something stupid, i was fooling around with the wires and they jsut started working, i think it was just a bad ground wire connection, but thanks for the help

Brake light relay 66
My 66 town landau is awesome. My brake lights do not work however. The previous owner said it was the relay. I have power coming into the relay. I have not checked power when brakes are applied because i dont have an extra person. Also there is no ground wire, it is just bolted to the trunk deck. What should I do??

However, the solid state replacment that you can get has the relay in it. I went for the solid state on my 66 and have had no problems, a good product' Joe |

I bought a new relay off of ebay. I hope that works. It is mounted in the trunk next to the spare tire with a 4 wire harness. I took the relay out of the case and it was all corroded, and the coil was busted. I bought the new relay and hope to put it in when it arrives. I have pics of my car here too.

brake light relay
Looking at the posted pictures, it looks like a fuel filter at the carburetor. Does your car have the filter on the bottom of the fuel pump per original Ford?
On another note: 1966 Thunderbirds equipped with Hiway Piolot (cruise control) has a brake light relay under the dash - left side. |
