1965 heater problems

I have a 65 bird that had an excellent heater but now is blowing cool air only. The control seems to have no friction to operate any valve etc. I don't know where to start.
Thanks:

Best bet is a problem with the vacuum control system. The water control valve is mounted in the engine compartment on the passenger side. There is a single vacuum line going to it. Set the control to "Heat", turn on your fan and then pull the vacuum line off the valve and see if there is suction. If not, the problem is probably with the control or lines attached to it. If there is suction the valve is faulty or line is kinked.
The shop manual has a complete description and diagnosis section.
This is pretty basic, but should get you started on the problem.

Is it an a/c or non a/c car? If non a/c you just have a cable that attaches to a heater door on heater box. Also check coolant level and is motor coming up to normal operating temp.

You are correct about the way the heater works in non-ac cars, but I assumed that since he was blowing cold air any door was open. Your point about coolant is a good place to start. With the engine to temperature, the hose running back to the firewall (or valve if there is one) should be hot to the touch.
