steering wheel

I have a 1964 tbird and up until about a month ago I could slide the steering wheel to the side very easily. All of a sudden I cannot push the lever and make the sw slide over. Does anybody have any suggestion as to where to start to fix this problem?

There are two causes I can think of. First, it's possible something broke in the swing-away mechanism--just wear wouldn't result in a sudden failure, I don't think.

The second is in the shift mechanism in the steering column. If that is original, or not rebuilt recently, wear in the shifter or gear detentes could keep the lever from moving far enough to release the swing away.

I'd crawl underneath to see the thing in action--it should be easy to spot where it's hanging up.

Thanks I will give that a try. I am unable to move the turn indicator lever up and down at all. I was not aware you could see the mechanism, I thought it was inside the steering column.

The turn indicator is really a separate piece, but sticking as it is, may be indicative of other issues in the column.

You might find out easier to see under the dash if you remove the driver's seat first.

I have a '65 and have to make sure I pull up on the gear lever to get the wheel to swing away. If I don't, it sticks or won't move at all. Not ideal but I'm leaving it for now. I think sseebart is right in my case - worn shift mechanism...
