I haven't done this yet, but...

Bird Nest seems to have a handle on this problem. Bird Nest 1958-66 Ford Thunderbird Parts

When I do decide to address this problem, this is where I plan to start. (Anything to do with the steering column and working under the dash makes me shudder and I put it off as long as I can!)

Having just completed work on the steering column of a '64, and reading several of the older threads on the topic, what you'll really need to focus on is the shift lever itself. The detent plate is much easier to replace (if the roll pin on the shift lever is as stuck as mine), but is also made of a much harder metal, so I doubt you'll find any wear on the old one. The shift lever will have grooves worn in it where it has been in contact with the detent plate...that's what's allowing it to slip between gear positions too easily.

Do you have to pull the shaft to replace the shifter

To replace the shift lever you do not have to remove anything just, drive out the pin holding it in. Just done two of them on a 64 and a 65.
