low temperature in 65
Because of leaks, I recently had my radiator recored and the supply tank replaced. The recore is a higher efficiency cooling than the original. The gauge in the car was working fine before the work. The gauge does go up a little but not to the middle where it was before. When I turn the engine off with the key on The gauge does creep up higher. Am I right in thinking the new thermostat is a defect and I am not having a problem with the gauge or sending unit? I am located in so cal so I am not too worried about getting this fixed right away. If I block the radiator with cardboard, how long should I run from a cold engine to determine if thermostat is problem?

Five minutes at idle should bring the engine up to normal operating temperature.

Thanks for the good ideas. Is the temp sending unit on the intake manifold directly behind distributor? There is a taped splice in the wire I am going to check. Repair manual says sending unit is on the block but vague on location. Does give a good picture of the gauge on the dash though.

I have been driving the car around and it is running fine. I am guessing the the higher efficiency radiator recore I had done makes it run lower and the thermostat may be lower than the one that is in there. In traffic the guage goes to just a little below mid level. All is good and driving great.
