64 thunderbird woes

i had a mechanic "fix" my speedometer but after a couple weeks when i accelerate the red line will go to 75 and come down lol. Also i just had some problems with my alternator so i got it replaced. I was working on the engine and it was so greasy i would get coated so i decided to clean out my engine bay i covered the distributer but when i tried to start it i couldnt so i let it sit for like an hour and then it started but on the way home it started to chug and then died i towed it home :(. I think i might of got water in the damn carb is this likely?

Speedometer: More than likely, you need to replace the speedometer drum, BUT first be sure the speedometer cable is free of any kinks or discontinuities. I would drive the speedometer head with another cable. You could have easily gotten water in the carburetor. Maybe you should have covered that. I would certainly check the distributor cap for moisture.

No, BREAK. This is what happens if you lost your BRAKE.

Speaking of which, my own 64 is sitting at a shop in Port Charlotte, geting its brakes fixed up. The 64 has drums on all four corners; I don't see this as a problem simply because millions of Fords drove billions of miles without problems using these brakes. True, disks have a better stopping distance and are less prone to fade, but a car such as this, mine at least, is relegated to light duty nowadays. It doesn't commute to work in heavy traffic, it doesn't pull trailers or take heavy loads, the steepest hill it ever climbs is the hump on the Sunshine Skyway, it hasn't seen snow in several years and rarely gets driven in the rain; it does two things -- takes me to and from car shows, and gives me a nice ride on a sunny day if the mood arises.
