Post TRANS LINKAGE

THIS MAY BE BEATING A DEAD HORSE. MY 66 BIRD HAS A NEWER TRANS. THE DRIVE I HAVE TO USE, IS THE BLACK DOT. IF I PULL THE LEVER DOWN TO THE GREEN DOT THE TRANS NEVER SHIFTS OUT OF SECOND. COULD BE A PROBLEM IF I FORGET AND GO TO THE NORMAL DETENT. DOES ANYONE HAVE A FIX FOR THIS????

Sounds like manual shift adjustment is needed.
With the engine stopped, loosen the nut at the lower end of the manual shift rod on the transmission shif lever.
With the steering column in the sraight ahead (locked in place} position move the shift lever to D1 position. (green dot}
Move the shift lever on the tranny to the D1 position. (second from bottom}
Tighten the nut on the shift rod and shift lever.
Ck. the pointer alignment for all positions.
This should do it Boats.
Good luck,
Joe

Joe
The newer style Ford Tranny thats in the car has drive 1 and drive 2 reverse of the older cruise-o-matic and C-6. The drive i need is the third postion on the trans thats in the car. My problem is i either have to make the detent stop at the black dot or figure out how to reverse the drives on the trans.
Thanks Boats

Wow, you got me Boats ---I'm only familiar with the C-6 and cruisomatic, I didn't know there were other trannys available.

YEA JOE I THINK IT'S LIKE A FORD AOD BUT NOT OVERDRIVE, I HAVE ONE IN MY 89 E250 VAN. IF YOU LOOKED AT YHE INDICATOR ON THE NEWER FORDS YOU WOULD SEE WHAT I HAVE. I THINK I'LL HAVE TO TAKE THE C-6 OUT OF MY PARTS CAR TO MAKE IT RIGHT. OH WELL MORE WORK.

Sounds like you have the cruisomatic which is NOT a dual range transmission. These transmissions were used on cars other than Thunderbirds. The indicator should read: P R N D 2 1. Cars with these transmissions provided a stop detent at D. Thunderbird did not. In the "1" position, you are in low. In the "2" position you are in second. In the "D" position you shift first, second and third gears.

THATS EXACTLY IT FORDMAN. SO I JUST HAVE TO BE CAREFULL TO KEEP IT IN THE BLACK DOT OR CHANGE THE TRANS TO THE CORRECT ONE.
THANKS
BOB
