1964 Door Handle Return Spring -- Available?

The driver's side door handle on my 64 does not return very well. Inside the door is a flat plate with a big coil spring -- that spring is broken. I understand this is really common and that I'll probably never find a good one. Is this true? Are the springs available new, or are good ones found on parts cars, or will I have to take this one apart and get creative?

I've solved the problem like you have in the past. Added an extension spring hidden between the sheet metal door and the door panel to pull the door handle to the position that latches the door.
