Wow
Well after walking around my bird and using it as a bench in the shop for the last 2 monthsit went on the lift. With oil pump in hand i removed the oil pan. That is when i found out why the motor had no oil pressure. The oil pump drive shaft snapped. With nothing to fix i decide to take a peak at the bearings. The motor apparently has not been rebuilt any time recently.i believe they could even be original. But worn, not very bad the copper just starting to show.I now have in hand the new oil pump, oil pump driveshaft, oil pickup tube, rod and main bearings.Sounds like i am ready for assembly.Any advice or suggestions

I agree w/Joe-give that crank a good visual first.Scrape the edge of a penny lengthwise on those journals-if any copper residue is left on the journal-you wanna drop it out for polishing/and/or a regrind. Also when you reassemble,be sure and put it all back together"WET".I use a 50/50 mix of SAE 30 non-detergent and STP for bearing jobs.Don't forget to check bearing clearances w/Plastigage at reassembly and crank 'er with the coil wire off just to be sure the new pump is gonna pump before you restart the 'ol 390.Good luck,BJ,Cannedband DJs :D

Has been a very long time but i finally put it together.I reassembled the lower end with new bearings, oil pump w\driveshaft.I also replaced the original fuel pump (died many years ago on the side of the road and was replaced with elec).I banged out and painted the oil pan.I painted the new fuel tank with POR-15 (,I also painted area of floor pan behind it)installed new sending unit straps and lines.Car started up after a little bit of cranking.Runs ok.I have to fiddle with carb a bit.

Oil pump was a joke to change.Unbolt mounts and lift motor up a bit
Unbolt the oil pan and let it hang Unbolt pump and let it fall into oil pan Turn crankshaft so oil pan can clear counterweight and pull pan out Reverse to assemble.Should not take long at all.Really is a no brainer.Takes maybe an hour on the lift probally not much longer on the floor |
