65 Power Window Problem

Hello All,

I have a 1965 T-Bird with power windows. Recently the front passenger window stopped working correctly. It seems the motor still works because I can hear it, but the window won't roll down nor up. If I help move the window manually, I can feel the power kick in to move it either up or down, but stops when I stop helping it.

Any Ideas? Could this potentially be costly?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

I have the same thing on my 65 convert, but back window. It works on the bench but not in the car. I can hear the motor click. I am newbee but this is what I've found. Take it out and lube all the tracks and the spring...the spring coils must be able to slide around each other. The spring must be at its tightest at the window down position. This is what I have to do after I take it out yet again. Some suggest hitting the window with a block of wood ... good luck!

Power window

I had a similar problem. In my case it turned out to be a worn worm gear. I replaced it. I think I had to replace the entire gear housing.

Hmm, how much did the that cost you to replace the gear housing?

If you hear the motor running I would bet the coupling for the gear is shot. I have seen 2 types, one being solid rubber to the gear and the other having 3 small nylon bushings that fall apart over time and then you get just what you describe, a running motor but no window movement. If you take the motor out and remove the cover off the gear I would bet you find your problem.

thanks so much for your help. I'm amazed all four motors held up for the past 45 years.

Power Window Gear w/ Housing

If I am looking at the right receipt, it was $55 from Thunderbird Connection.
