64 Vert Auto Trans Leak

I am working on a friends 64 convertable. Has the 390 with an auto trans. It has a leak from the drivers side of the case which I think is the shifter shaft seal. I removed the pan and was going to remove the shifter shaft, but determined that there is not enough clearence for the shaft to exit the transmission before hitting the frame rail. Is there any why around this without removing the whole trans? The car sat for many years and the problem might be dried seals. I am thinking a stop leak additive might be the way to go if there is not other way to replace the seal. Any thoughts.

Thanks
John

There is a seal and an oring there. To remove you have to loosen front servo and drop valve body to get to the nut on the shaft. Also a loaded detent pin to watch out for when you pull the shaft. Always did mine with tranny out, But maybe you could drop crossmember and let tranny down just a bit. [ just a guess] I had a couple leak, But they didn't leak much so i just let them be. Stop leak may help. If you pull the tranny you maybe should put the internal seals in also since the car sat. They get hard and shrink also, Then the car doesn't shift correct or at all.
