Knocking ball joints

After reading posts on the site, I figured out that the noise in my 65 convert front end is probably lower ball joints. I can see them move when I wiggle the tires with my hands and they knock going over any bump in the road. I have two questions:
First: I am an amateur mechanic with many (too many?) years of experience. Can I do ball joints?
Second: If I can, does anyone know of a good "how to" to help me along?
I have the service manual but they use specialized tools and don't have enough pics to show me what it will look like during the process.
