Post 134a

Just purchased a 65 Convertible on eBay with great success. The car is beautiful and very original.

The A/C was hardly ever used so the compressor is frozen. My A/C guy is going to replace it and go to 134a, but he mentioned that it might be a good idea to add a fan on the condenser to boost the cooling and make up for the difference between the R12 and 134a refrigerants. Any thoughts?

If your radiator and the rest of the cooling system is in good working order i would try it without the aux. fan. Be sure the new compressor is installed with refrigeration oil that is compatible with 134A. Also 134A has a tendency to leak easier than R12, so take a good look at your hoses.

Condenser cooling is important but if your Bird came with factory air you probably have the heavy duty radiator and a good shroud plus a good fan. I have air on my 66 and it performs very well although I am still using the R12.
