65 bird runnin like crap

Hello all. I am working on my Dad's 65 Bird. It has the 390. The problem is that it seems to run good at idle but as soon as you put it in gear the performance drops way off. It bucks and skips and feels like it will cut off, but it doesn't. When I try to drive it it takes forever to get up to speed but it will reach highway speeds. It wants to cut off when you first hit the gas pedal from a dead start. I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, points, condensor. I have also adjusted the carb and distributor. I may be guessing here but it sounds like the timing is off. It does have about 88,000 miles on it. Any help would be appreciated. Also, i had to buy a new ignition switch and can't seem to get the lock cylinder into it. They do not seem to line up at all.

Check your ignition wires to make sure there on the right plugs! Check for vacuum leaks

To remove and install the ignition switch, the key and cylinder should be in the assessory position. Push in the spring loaded button on the ignition switch and turn it counterclockwise.
