Post Trans problems

I have a 65 with a 390 engine and Cruise-o-matic trans. I recently replaced the shift lever and lower shoft tube bushing which tightened up the sloppy shifter. Now the car will not go into gear at all. When I move the lever out of park the emergency brake releases as it is supposed to but the trans doesn't shift into any gear. The linkage seems to be moving the lever on the side of the trans, but nothing happens. Is the neutral safety swithch somehow involved with this or is the trans shot? Is there any trouble shooting I can do before I drag it into a trans shop?

Rog,
Unless the control lever is turning on the shaft, you have a problem. The neutral start switch is not involved.

Joe:
Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thoguht to check that. From just looking at it, it appears like the lever is moving when the linkage from the shift tube is moved but it might be just spinning on the shaft instead of working the gears. I'm going to check that out as soon as I get home tonight! Thanks
