Shift lever drops

Still having problems with my shift-lever.

It stays in Park but due to the increased spring pressure from the new Neutral Safety Switch the shift-lever will drop from Reverse into Neutral then into Drive (often while I'm reversing!). It did this too with the old switch but not as bad.

I had the worn part of the lever built-up and re-shaped but it feels like there is nothing for the lever to 'grip' on the detent plate in the Reverse and Neutral positions, hence the above problem.

Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it???

Sounds like the detent plate is bad, but that would be very unusual..

My 65 would do the same thing. I had the steering box rebuilt and the shift bushing located at the end of the steering coulmn replaced. The bushing made a big difference in the shift lever posistion and staying in the gear selected.

Thanks for that,I have one of those bushes on its way from California to here, I'll replace it and see how things go then.

Is it a #@*^% of a job to replace the bush or is it not TOO bad?
Any advice gratefully accepted!!

SCUMDOG,
I had the bushing replaced during a rebuild of the power steering box. It is my understanding that the box should be removed to access the bushing. The repalcement imroved my shift lever. Good luck! and Merry Christmas..
