Mystery electrical stuff

I'm working on restoring a '66 car orginally from California. I have a couple elctrical items I can't find in any manual and don't make sense to me. Hoping some of you veterans can help me out. It starts with what looks like a coil (round tube) with two wires coming out located in the grill just inside the driver's side horn. Two wires go to a square metal box in the driver's side fender apron right behind the grill. Two other wires go from the square metal box through the fire wall under the carpet. Haven't gone to the trouble of removing the carpet yet. Any idea what this coil and square box may be? THANKS!

RUN IT'S A BOMB. ha ha
Do the wires and connectors look original or does it look like some kind of aftermarket device?

Wow, I think that's "Da Bomb!" Nice looking ride. The coil, box and wires are definitely old. Hard to tell if same age as car, but no plastic wire splices or recent looking connections. Going to try to post some pictures.

Sounds aftermarket to me.

Two guesses, without pictures. Does your car have transisterized ignition ? And the second guess would be since you have a CA car could it be part of the Thermactor Emission system? I think 66 was the first year with that and I would imagine early printing 66 manuals might have skipped it. Post some pics if you can

Thanks for the replies and tries. I can't seem to reach a moderator to get permission to post pictures. So, unless that happens I'm stuck.

The Thermactor system had no such animals --- refer to 66 shop manual.
