Engine Compartment

I'm pretty sure the 66 thunderbird's engine compartment is supposed to match the exterior color but half of the birds that I see have black engine compartments even when the exterior is the original color. Does anyone know why? was it an option?

Thanks,
Josh

Why? Because other cars (even Mustangs) have black engine compartments. And it's easier for an owner who may not be a good painter to paint it black instead of trying to match the exterior color.
