Exclamation Disc brake pad replacement

I read in the manual that to replace the pads you just have to remove the wheel , caliper splash shield, push pistons into their bores and the just grasp the metal flange on the outer end of the shoe with 2 pairs of pliers and pull the shoe out of the caliper and replace with new shoe.has anyone done this and should I expect any surprises ? I always thought that the caliper had to be taken apart to remove the pads.
Thanks,Luke

brake pads

Like the book says Luke, it's a snap. I've done it twice on my 66.

Same here.. Done it many times. The task is pushing the pistons back into the bores. Nevertheless, it is easy..

Do you have any advice or tips on how to push those pistons back into their bores ? I am a novice mechanic but I am trying to learn...Thanks Luke

I use a "C" clamp.. Use the old brake pad on the piston. Be sure to remove fluid from the master cylinder or it will overflow..

Thumbs up

Hi Joe & Harley...I just finished replacing my brake pads and not a moment too soon...the old ones were about the width of a nickel. Everything went fine except I was surprised how hard it was to get those pistons back into the caliper. My -C clamp was too big and I couldn't position it right so I used the old pads to push and then finally a pair of pliers to finish the task. Road tested it and heard alot of tapping...pulled the wheels again to find out I put the splash shields on backwards.Overall it went well and I'm glad it did it myself. Thanks again ...

Right ! There is an inside and outside to the "splash shields" which actually are pad retainers.
